Shortly after the end of the meeting with the President of the Republic, the Burkinabe Minister of National Education made the following statement on behalf of his Sahelian peers:
“We, Ministers of Education of the Sahel countries, were honored by His Excellency the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, who received us after a working session here in Nouakchott; a session that follows the Nouakchott summit in December 2021.
We made some big decisions today. In this framework, we decided to draw up a roadmap allowing the periodic implementation of actions until February 2023. We have also decided to create the Institute of Educational Sciences of the Sahel countries.
This institute, which will have its headquarters in Mauritania, aims to strengthen the education system of the entire region but also to build capacities in terms of training of trainers and teachers, in addition to an innovation and research component to find solutions to common problems in the Sahel region.
Beyond these two points, we have discussed the possibility of creating a regional project for the development of basic education in the Sahel region. This requires a reflection for a transversal project.
We also agreed to establish a permanent framework for consultation and monitoring to maintain this commitment, this will, and this desire of the Ministers of Education of the Sahel to deal with the problems together and allow the emergence of a community of action promoting convincing results.
We have together expressed the wish that the education system of the Sahel be an adapted and efficient system. It is an opportunity for us to thank the Islamic Republic of Mauritania for its leadership, commitment, and determination in favor of an efficient education system. We also thank the Mauritanian Minister of National Education and the Reform of the Education System for his guidance and support.
