French Ambassador: We Are Constantly Working to Continuously Improve Our Relations with Mauritania

The French Ambassador to our country, H.E. Robert Moullie, confirmed that Mauritania and France are constantly working to improve their relations and to achieve common peace and prosperity in their countries and in the Sahel region in general.

In a speech delivered thursday evening at the French Embassy in Nouakchott, on the occasion of the National Day of the French Republic, he added that France seeks to support Mauritania in order to achieve progress and prosperity in all areas, especially national unity and social cohesion, highlighting that this cooperation covered several areas, including the defence sectors and security.

He praised Mauritania's efforts over the past few years to stabilize the region, highlighting that French President Emmanuel Macron, during meetings with His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani, praised Mauritania's remarkable success in working for security and stability in the Sahel region.

He said the two countries have a partnership in many areas, especially within the Framework of the Sahel Group, by working to counter terrorist threats, adding that this cooperation is also reflected in the development of infrastructure.

He added also that the partnership includes the public and private sectors, highlighting that it has many projects in various areas of interest to French investors, and these investments are in addition to 50 French companies that have created more than 2,000 direct jobs in Mauritania as well as many other indirect jobs.

France was Mauritania's main partner with an average annual expenditure of US$40 million in 2019-2020. Some 30 projects are currently being implemented in Mauritania by the French Agency for Development and the French Cooperation Department with a total value of 180 million euros.

The ceremony took place in the presence of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Mauritanians abroad, Mr. Mohamed Salim Ould Marzough, the National Defence Mr. Hanenne Ould Sidi, and the Economic Affairs and Promotion of Productive Sectors, Mr. Ousman Mamodou Kane.
